As usual, I started planning where all the garden plants were going to be planted. This planning always starts in the cold weather when snow still blankets the ground and I am dreaming of the garden and all the delicious fruits and vegetables that I will have at my fingertips soon enough.

Well, I completely forgot to share my plans. Again, the last few months have just gotten away from me, so getting to add posts to this blog has lacked horribly, for which I am sorry. But the good news is that I should have more to share in the coming months. I will do my best to make it as entertaining as possible to make up for the absence over the winter.
Ok, so back to the planning. I am a bit of a nerd and enjoy playing with design programs, so obviously I am going to nerd it up and add some images into photos of our yard to plan out the garden. Does this take more time than just writing it down on a piece of scrap paper, absolutely. Do I like looking at the visual of it and then later comparing it to how the garden was actually planted, positively. Do we often change up the plans and not follow our photos and well thought out ideas, indubitably!
Because I have been delayed in posting this picture, I can actually provide an update as to accuracy of this plan to date. So here goes.
To the left, to the left….all the early plants in the beds to the left (Beyonce was in my head as I wrote this). The left side contains a few plants that winter, like the rhubarb and our strawberries. This year we also planted our garlic on this side and started some of our onions that we were testing out for over-winter growing. Over the last weekend, we added more onions (red and yellow), potatoes, carrots and beets. How does this compare to the plans? ON POINT…adjacent.

Technically the photo shows celery instead of beets being in the lower garden bed, but other than that, it is planted just as it is shown.
Moving to the other half of the yard, there is currently nothing planted. It is but a blank canvas of plans. So what do we plan? The top bed will have tomatoes, peppers and one of the vining plants, either squash or cantaloupe, or watermelon. The bottom bed will have cabbage, cucumbers, possibly one of our other vining plants alongside the cucumbers, cauliflower, broccoli, ground cherries, and we are considering adding peas back into the mix.

I can tell you already, that the beets that are in the lower bed will not be there. As mentioned, they are on the left side by the strawberries. Instead, we may possibly put peanuts there. It was an impulse by, because why not? We like to add something new to the garden every year, and peanuts sounded like a good idea. However, I need to re-read the information about them because it may require some re-jigging as to where it goes to make sure we aren’t negatively impacting any of the plants around it.
As you can see, the plan is already starting to unravel on the right side. Unfortunately, it just seems to be the way of planning a garden. A very loose plan to be discarded once seeds and plants start going into the ground.
Now, if you’ve been following along closely, you may be asking where that celery went. Well, I can assure you that there will be celery planted. It is happily growing in the living room right now. Once the weather warms back up, it will find a nice little home in the new 8′ planter that was added by the back patio. Lettuce and pak choi will also likely be added to this area. That being said, once we see what the beds are actually looking like, perhaps some of those will make it down into the right side garden beds. If there is room, we will fill it!
So there you have it. A delayed plan and an update about how that plan is going all in one post. Normally I would stretch that out to at least 2 posts. Oh well, more fun stuff coming!
